Hong Kong stocks close flat

HONG KONG, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong stocks drop 10.75 points, or 0.05 percent, to close at 20,699.19 on Tuesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between a day high of 20,881.85 points and a day low of 20,649.27 points. Turnover was 61.42 billion HK dollars (7.92 billion U.S. dollars).

The four sub-indices ended mixed. The Utilities and the Commerce & Industry sub-indices were up 0.7 and 0.24 percent respectively while the Finance and the Properties sub-indices dipped 0.26 and 0.69 percent respectively.

The China Enterprises Index moved down 65.09 points, or 0.56 percent, to end at 11,499.77 points.

Banking giant HSBC rose 0.74 percent to close at 68.4 HK dollars. China Mobile, China's dominant mobile carrier, gained 0. 39 percent to 77.95 HK dollars.

Most Chinese mainland lenders listed in Hong Kong closed lower in the second consecutive day. ICBC, China's largest bank by market value, dropped 0.18 percent to close at 5.45 HK dollars; CCB, the country's second largest lender by market capitalization, lost 0.94 percent to close at 6.32 HK dollars; BOC, one of the " big four" moved down 1.18 percent to 3.35 HK dollars.

China Life, one of the world's largest life insurers by market value, lost 2.15 percent to 22.75 HK dollars. Another Chinese insurer Ping An dropped 1.65 percent to 62.7 HK dollars.

Local property developers ended mixed. Cheung Kong properties, owned by billionaire Li Ka-shing, gained 0.58 percent to 104.6 HK dollars. Henderson Land ended 0.92 percent lower to 43.05 HK dollars.

PetroChina, the country's largest oil and gas producer, closed 0.87 percent higher to 11.6 HK dollars. Sinopec, China's top refiner edged down 0.64 percent to 9.28 HK dollars. CNOOC gained 1.21 percent to 16.78 HK dollars.

Esprit Hldgs was the best performed blue chip of the trading day, with its shares jumped 4.76 percent to 13.66 HK dollars. China Mer Hldgs dropped the most of 3.28 percent to 28 HK dollars.
