Parliament pays tribute to the late Dr Toh Chin Chye

Parliament observed a minute of silence on Tuesday as a mark of respect for the late Dr Toh Chin Chye.

Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer opened the session with a tribute to independent Singapore?s first deputy prime minister, who died nearly a fortnight ago at the age of 90.

Hailing Dr Toh as a 'founding father of modern Singapore' who contributed significantly to its development during the 'crucial nation-building years', Mr Palmer paid tribute to his political career which spanned almost three decades.

'Dr Toh will be remembered for his great integrity, his tenacity and his unwavering determination to serve the cause of Singapore, his beloved country, to the best of his ability,' said Mr Palmer, who expressed his condolences to Dr Toh's family before asking all in the House to rise.
